Vitamin C and schizophrenia

Vitamin C-dependent prolyl hydroxylase and procollagen-lysine 5-dioxygenase, which are involved in collagen synthesis, are Fe2+ and 2-oxoglutarate dependent enzymes. With shortages of 2-oxglutarate and dysregulation of iron metabolism individuals with schizophrenia  could have difficulties in the synthesis of collagen despite adequate intakes of vitamin C. In addition to all the other difficulties that individuals with schizophrenia face individuals with schizophrenia could also have an unrecognized form of scurvy where treatment would demand normalization of 2-oxoglutarate synthesis and iron metabolism.
